The Table in the Frame

On cinema, billiards and the way an object holds a scene.

A billiards table gives the eye a clear field: a rectangle, six pockets, a few spheres. A small movement changes the arrangement.

Cinema is part of the beginning of AMES. The Hustler sits alongside our love of the game: a reference we return to when thinking about the table, the people around it and the attention a familiar object can command.

The Six carries that geometry into another kind of frame. Four corner pockets and two side pockets remain; the playing surface gives way to a print or photograph.

The reference need not be recognised for the frame to work. A picture arrives, and the object holds another scene.
